![]() This can result in confusion and often is a major contributor to deadlines failing to be met and dissatisfaction amongst the team. Sometimes your project team might be comprised of some, if not all, remote workers. Stakeholders might not fully communicate requirements, or dependencies might be missed. Communication is crucial as it allows for cohesive work to be done, and it’s often one of the areas in which projects break down internally. This can include the project team, scope statements, risk registers, and any of the processes that are within the control of the project manager. Internal roadblocks are any issues that halt project progress that originate from conflict within the project’s boundaries. ![]() When external roadblocks come into play, you will have to be creative and find alternate routes and solutions, while still accounting for this uncontrollable wrench thrown into the mix. Generally, these roadblocks are more difficult to overcome due to their nature you cannot directly influence or control the cause of the problem, and so it might take a long time or a lot of money in order to directly resolve the issue. They can range from issues such as funding being cut-off by stakeholders, to off-shore resources being let go, to a natural disaster destroying your on-site facilities. These external roadblocks cannot all be planned for, despite your best efforts in drafting plans and outlining mitigation strategies. In a lot of cases, you will have no control over the roadblocks that derail your projects as they are caused by outside forces. Generally, roadblocks can be thought of as either internal or external. The key is to find the right software that will allow you to tackle whatever roadblocks hit your projects. This may seem like an overwhelming reality, but there is software you can use to organize your project management and overcome whatever problems arise. Because project management can be applied to any number of industries, a variety of problems can arise and block progress. As with any conflict, there are internal and external forces that can create friction, which lead to roadblocks in project management. Even when managing similar projects, you must keep in mind that no two projects are exactly the same, from the planning phase to risk identification. There is no formula for successful project management. Results will be published through an interactive webmap of checkpoints in South Sudan, and an accompanying analytical report.Last updated: JanuThe Most Common Roadblocks to Project Management Primary data on individual road- and river checkpoints will be collected in collaboration with a range of experienced South Sudanese researchers. IPIS will deploy a specifically developed methodology which combines in-field geospatial and survey- based data collection with qualitative context analysis. And while one roadblock is not necessarily a problem, collectively, roadblocks can strangle economic activity and threaten livelihoods by disincentivizing trade and even agricultural surplus production. Yet absent regular salary, roadblocks can also be crucial for stability by providing (illicit) pay for armed forces. ![]() Recent evidence from neighboring countries – including DR Congo and CAR – suggests that roadblocks can be a key source of funding for conflict actors. Without evidence-based answers to these basic questions, we cannot gauge the broader developmental impact of roadblocks in South Sudan’s political economy. IPIS and Danish Institute for International Studies ( DIIS) will implement a research project to develop a detailed understanding of the exact scope of the phenomenon of checkpoints in South Sudan. Checkpoints are a major constraint to trade, economic development, and humanitarian access in South Sudan. Whereas roadblocks in principle have legitimate roles to fulfil - ensuring security and levying decentralized taxes - they can also become vehicles for insecurity and illegal taxation.Īlong South Sudanese roads and rivers, state agents, security forces as well as armed groups occupy checkpoints at which they levy illegal taxes and hamper movement. Roadblocks are a structural feature of South Sudanese roads. ![]()
